Greyhound Inn, Staple Fitzpaine, Somerset
Virginia creeper climbs up the walls of this village inn on the Blackdown Hills, where dogs and muddy boots are welcome. It’s a big old rambling place, with heaps of character; flagstone floors, stone walls, oak beams, and plenty of quirky country bits and pieces. Food is good, with a sensible choice of mains on the menu, including Slow Roasted Belly Pork, Free Range Duck Breast and Grilled Seabass Fillets. As you’d expect, all ingredients are sourced locally. It’s a handy one to remember if you’re out and about as it’s only 5 minutes from Taunton and 10 minutes from J25 of the M5. Plan a walk in the hills so that you wind up here, whatever the season; you’ll have log fires in the winter and in the summer you can sit outside beneath the pergola. The teenagers can play pool.
