Somerset
Somerset is beautiful, it's a fact and it's little surprise that it's an increasingly popular West Country holiday destination. The landscape is of rolling green hills, narrow winding lanes with high hedgerows that are filled with wild flowers in the springtime, pretty villages with centuries old cottages, and quaint market towns. There are several Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty – Exmoor National Park, the Quantock Hills, the Blackdowns, the Mendips with magnificent Cheddar Gorge, and the mystical Somerset Levels with world famous Glastonbury Tor rising out of the flat landscape. It’s amazing how varied the beaches are along the coast – the flat expanse of sands at Weston-Super-Mare, the sand and shingle at Dunster, and the rockpools at Kilve. And then there’s the towns and cities – great for shopaholics or just for a day out with plenty to see and do; the county town of Taunton, Bath with its Georgian architecture and Roman history, and Bristol with its vibrant buzz and lively shopping centres. The smaller towns are well worth a visit too, especially Wells – the cathedral is breathtaking, and the cobbled Vicars’ Close is believed to be the only complete medieval street in England. Get out there and explore this gorgeous county.
