If you need to stock up go to Wellington when the Farmer’s Market is on and fill your basket with the best of local produce; otherwise head to Taunton, browse the shops, visit The Museum of Somerset, go ten pin bowling or play on the high ropes at Vivary Park Adventure Centre. Go down to Tiverton where you can drift along the Great Western Canal on a horse drawn barge, then have a Devon cream tea in the Canal Tea Rooms & Garden or a drink on board Duck’s Ditty Floating Café Bar.
How about a nostalgic trip to the coast by steam train with The West Somerset Railway? Alight at Blue Anchor or Minehead and play on the sands, or stop at Dunster where you can go to the medieval castle on the hill above the village. Pootle over to Exmoor National Park for the day to explore the rufty tufty moors and steep wooded valleys; stroll along the river at Watersmeet, take in the charm of Porlock Weir, make a summit bid on Dunkery Beacon for panoramic views of the immense landscape. Have a picnic at Culm Beacon in the Blackdown Hills, or discover the wilds of the Quantock Hills; go to Fyne Court, climb Wills Neck, or Holford Combe for a walk along the high ridge. If surfing is your thing you could head over to Croyde or Woolacombe on the North Devon Coast; families can have a good day out at Lyme Regis on the Jurassic Coast where there’s a marine aquarium, crazy golf, rockpools to discover, and Dinosaurland Fossil Museum. Take the kids to Diggerland, Tropiquaria or Crealy Adventure Park; soak up history and splendour at Knightshayes Court or Killerton House, see the beautiful gardens at Hestercombe, or closer to home have a tour of Sheppy’s Cider where you can see how the local brew is made.
