Sherborne, Dorset

If it’s not too far from your large group holiday home, go and spend some time in Sherborne. The main street is pedestrianised so it’s easy to mooch about the shops without having to watch out for traffic, and you’ll find an eclectic selection, with kooky homewares, elegant boutiques, an old toy shop, and a fabulous second hand bookshop. Sherborne is establishing itself as a ‘go to’ place for arts and antiques, and of course, for its history; where else would you find two castles, a word famous school and a splendid abbey. If you stroll around the streets of the town centre you’ll notice some rather impressive medieval architecture and charming 15th century almshouses. Little Wonder the town is a popular film location, featuring in the 2015 adaptation of Far from the Madding Crowd, Wolf Hall, and The Imitation Game. Those in search of refreshments or a spot of lunch should try The Green, The Pear Tree, or for something pubby, The White Hart.
