Stockland, Devon

This peaceful village lies in the folds of the Blackdown Hills AONB close to where Devon meets Somerset. There's a feel of yesteryear in the quiet streets and the narrow winding lanes, a far cry from the hurly-burly of life in the city. Nowt wrong with that.

Like a lot of traditional villages up and down the country, Stockland has a strong community spirit, with regular events held at the village hall, produce and craft markets, and a lively fair held every year on the Spring Bank Holiday. There's a cricket club, a tennis club, a youth club and a well attended primary school; in the middle of the village is the community owned pub, The Kings Arms, popular for its hearty atmosphere, local ales and good food. Go and have lunch there after a good walk in the fields and hills around the parish or a stroll along the River Yarty.
