Michelham Priory, Upper Dicker, Hailsham, East Sussex

Michaelham Priory has such a dreamy setting, on an island in the beautiful Cuckmere Valley; it’s a lovely place to visit when you’re on your large group holiday in East Sussex, with something to interest the whole family – children will enjoy the hands-on activities, the dressing up box and the play area.

This place has an incredible history, founded as an Augustinian Priory over 800 years ago, surviving through the Dissolution and the Civil War, to sheltering refugees in the Second World war. It’s now a country house, set in picturesque 7 acre grounds that include a Kitchen garden, a Physic and Herb Garden, and a Vegetable Garden with sculptures dotted round about. There’s a centuries old watermill and forge, an interactive Medieval gallery in the 14th century gatehouse, trails to follow and events throughout the year.

Inside the house the rooms reflect the different ages and have fascinating displays of furniture and artefacts; see the Victorian kitchen, the evacuee’s bedroom, the Prior’s Room and the Undercroft. Take your time to wander round and discover its past, then stroll around the moat and feed the resident ducks before rounding off your visit in the café.
