Barrington Court, Somerset (NT)

Barrington Court near Ilminster in Somerset is a beautiful Tudor house that was saved from rack and ruin after being used for years as a farmhouse and cider store. It's where Wolf Hall was filmed, and if you've seen that you'll know that the house is a masterpiece of 16th century architecture, and goodness, the treasures within! See the glorious midnight blue ceiling painted with twinkling stars in the Great Hall, the delicately hand painted tiles in the ‘modern’ bathrooms, and the amazing Long Gallery, running the entire length of the attics, once used for indoor exercise.

Wander through the formal gardens, laid out with consultation from the celebrated Gertrude Jekyll; delight in the kitchen garden, where in the autumn there's a huge pumpkin patch and feature arches hung with ornamental gourdes; in the summer the scent from the rose and iris garden drifitng on the breeze is tantalising. Good news for dog owners is that your pet pooch is permitted on a lead, in certain areas and in the parkland, so pull on your boots, go and explore.

When you're done have a little browse in the Gift Shop and the Book Barn then go to the Tea Room for a sticky bun washed down with a nice pot of brew.

Open: Every day 10.00am-5.00pm (opening hours for the house differ - please check the website)
