The location, in South Devon, is just perfect for holidays and short breaks any time of year, but especially for those dreamy summer holidays; days spent exploring the huge grounds, making sandcastles on the beach, having picnics on the sand, catching the ferry across the estuary to Salcombe. It’s all got a touch of the yesteryear about it, a little Swallows and Amazons, a world away from the push and shove of life. This is where you wind down and completely relax.
Inside, Smalls is light and airy, crisp and bright, finished in white and blue echoing the coastal location. The house is set on a hill with gorgeous views across the estuary and the grounds are immense, sloping right down to the beach at Smalls Cove where a section is roped off with exclusive use for people staying at Smalls. Smalls Cove is a lovely secluded bay, only accessible on foot when the tide is out, so it tends to be quiet. If you’ve got a boat or hire one you can even moor it off the beach with prior permission.
Just outside of the kitchen there’s a decking area where you can sit and enjoy long and leisurely barbecues; wander down to the hot tub for a relaxing soak, gazing out over the water to Salcombe. Yes, it really is that wonderful! The gardens continue across a narrow road where there’s a wooded area, ponds and another decking area with a firepit. It’s the perfect spot to sit and watch the sunset and the lights reflected on the water before you stroll back up to the house and turn in for the night.
And you don’t need us to tell you what a fantastic area this is for a holiday; surrounded by the beautiful rolling hills of the South Hams, there are clifftop walks on the South West Coast Path, several excellent beaches with safe swimming, charming maritime towns to browse and attractions to visit. Add to that a wide choice of country pubs, beachside cafes and seafood restaurants and you won’t be short of things to do, but in a holiday house with a private beach and a hot tub, we completely understand if you don’t feel the need to go anywhere.
