Holiday Properties in Melksham
Melksham is a small market town on the River Avon in Wiltshire; it's considered a good place to live, crime is low, shops and pubs and cafes are nearly all independently owned and there's a strong sense of community with regular events throughout the year like a Scarecrow Trail, a Music Festival and a Food & River Festival. The historic quarter around the church, Canon Square and Church Walk makes for a pleasant stroll as there are several pretty cottages and listed houses; tucked away down a side street there's a tiny two storey round house that was built in the late 18th century as a wool drying room - Melksham was once a prosperous wool town.
On Tuesdays there's quite a buzz in the town with local producers and artisans selling their wares at the market; take a basket along and fill it with all kinds of Wiltshire goodies - freshly baked bread, fruit and veg, jams and chutneys and the like. If you have an hour or so to spare take a stroll along the river and explore the nature reserve where if you're very, very lucky you might get a glimpse of a kingfisher darting over the water. The Kennet & Avon Canal also passes through Melksham and an afternoon walking or cycling along the towpath to Caen Hill Locks or to Bradford on Avon, and even on to Bath is an afternoon well spent.
There are several places to eat in the town, among them a few surprises like Casa for authentic Italian fare, or if you prefer pub grub try The Kings Arms or The Milk Churn. Nearby you can visit Great Chalfield Manor, Lacock and Bowood House and Gardens.
