Twenty_Seven by Jamie Rogers, Kingsbridge, Devon

Twenty_Seven by Jamie Rogers is the perfect example of a dream come true; when Jamie was a lad he used to wander past this very building in Kingsbridge, look up, and think that somehow, one day he would own and run his own restaurant from here. Wind forward several years and Jamie’s all grown up and he’s done it; this beautiful loft-like restaurant is his.

What he’s created is a very calm and ambient space, kept crisp and simple, with interesting artworks on the walls and most of all, award-winning food that’s created with flair and passion. Testament to the excellent fine dining is the fact that since opening when the first lockdown was lifted Twenty_Seven has been sold out every night.

The spring menu tempts you with a starter of Cappuccino of haricots blancs and truffle served with a Smoked cheese scone and whipped salted caramel butter; it moves onto mains like Wye Valley asparagus tartlet, Salcombe lobster and wild salmon ravioli, and Smoked Creedy Carver chicken & foie gras pressé. Or you might opt for Roasted day boat hake with River Exe mussels, Jersey Royals, mussel and parsley velouté, or perhaps Rose Farm pork with black pudding & best end Wellington, cheek and belly, quince, carrot and Heron Valley cider. Round it off with a truly divine pudding – maybe Lemon meringue tart with champagne & raspberry sorbet, or Blackcurrant soufflé with cream cheese ice cream and cassis Anglaise.

You must go if you’re down this way on your large group holidays in Devon, only if there’s more than 6 of you, do ring in advance. And another thing - hold onto your dreams because just look what happened when Jamie Rogers didn’t let go of his.
