The Turf, Exeter, Devon

The Turf has a glorious setting between the Exeter Canal and the beautiful Exe estuary, just a few miles from Exeter and Topsham. It’s one of the few pubs in the entire country that can’t be reached by car, so you have to go by bike or on foot, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, by boat or kayak, which can be hired from Saddles and Paddles down on the historic quayside in Exeter.

The menu has a good choice of light bites, meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes, so no matter what your tastes, you’ll find something to suit you. it changes with the seasons and with what’s available in the local area and throughout the South West, but to give you an idea, you can expect temptations like Beer battered fish & chips, Chargrilled Dartmoor lamb steak, Falafel flatbread and Devon Crab with lemon mayo & rocket served on toasted sourdough.

It goes without saying that if the weather is good, the best place to sit is outside with the waterside views. In the warmer months there’s a Garden Bar and BBQ, which is, needless to say, very popular, so if that appeals, make sure you get there early. If there’s more than 5 of you and you want to sit indoors, you’ll need to book a table in any case.
