The Rock Inn, Waterrow, Somerset

A very nice 450 year old gastro pub in the most beautiful countryside close to Exmoor National Park. Inside it’s all oak beamed ceilings, wooden floors and inglenook fireplaces; outside at the front, there are tables to sit at when the weather is nice. The food is a very original mix of traditional pub dishes and more contemporary cuisine; on the starters are delights such as Cornish fish soup with croutons, gruyere and aioli, and wild rabbit pate topped with cranberry jelly served with devils on horseback. And a couple of things from the mains: Featherblade of Aberdeen Angus Beef marinated in black garlic and black treacle, cooked slowly for 14 hours, with rainbow carrots and Cheddar cheese mash; and sweet potato flavoured gnocchi with fresh spinach, red onions, pine kernels, grilled artichoke and parmesan shavings. Tempted? They don’t mind well behaved dogs on a lead in the bar and dining room.
