The Old Ship Aground, Minehead, Somerset

The Old Ship Aground is a good place to go for lunch if you’re spending a day by the sea in Minehead. This welcoming pub stands right on the quay at the end of the beach, with views over the historic harbour to the Quantock Hills; in the summer the Edwardian exterior looks so pretty, when the hanging baskets are brimming over with flowers.

Inside is a blend of traditional and modern, but it’s fine, it works well because it’s in keeping and there’s still plenty of original character. They serve seasonal home cooked pub food which you can eat in the bar, in the Courtyard Restaurant or, if the sun is shining, out on the quay where you can watch people crabbing and the little boats bobbing up and down in the harbour.  Expect to see mains like burgers and steak on the menu, alongside dishes like Pork belly with fondant potato braised red cabbage, parsnip puree and a mustard and tarragon sauce, Provencal fish stew, and Creamy Cajun chicken tagliatelle with chilli, basil and cherry tomatoes.

If you’ve gone into town for fish and chips or had a picnic on the beach, drop by The Old Ship Aground for coffee and cake. It’s dog friendly, good value for money, the atmosphere is friendly and the service is good service, so really, there’s nothing not to like.
