The Grove, Exmouth, Devon

Right on the seafront in Exmouth where the River Exe flows into the sea, The Grove has all the ethos of a traditional pub – but it’s certainly kept up with the times when it comes to décor and the food that’s served. Interiors are polished wooden floors with rugs, soft lamplight and mismatched tables and chairs. When it’s cold out and the open fire’s crackling away you won’t want to leave, you’ll want to hunker down with a plate of food and a nice pint of local brew, nice and snug and perfectly happy.

But The Grove is a pub for all seasons so if the weather’s good and it’s warm, sit out in the garden or on the terrace where you can best enjoy the amazing coastal views; otherwise find a table indoors by the window, order a glass of wine and see what takes your fancy on the menu. If you’re not all that hungry have a bar snack, maybe a Lamb & wild garlic scotch egg, crispy whitebait or a Beef & vegetable pasty; perhaps a sandwich is all you need – Crayfish & prawn, Lamb & wild garlic sausages with caramelised onion chutney, or Pea & wild garlic hummus with Nutbourne tomato & spinach.

But if you’ve plenty of room in your belly choose from the very tempting sharers (Seafood platter, Ploughman’s, Baled Somerset Camembert) or mains like Smoked haddock & prawn fish pie, 8oz Bavette steak with green peppercorn butter, watercress, fries, or their very own Grove beef burger. Not a meat eater? Fear not, you’ll have a good choice too - Gnocchi, wild mushroom, spinach & wild garlic pesto, Tender stem broccoli, Oxfordshire courgette & wild rice salad, or Plant burger. Sunday is roast day, time to linger, time to enjoy.
