The Crown Inn, Dilwyn, Dilwyn, Hereford, Herefordshire

The Crown Inn at Dilwyn is what you’d call a proper country pub, set in a 17th century building overlooking the village green. Dilwyn is one of the villages on the Black & White Village Trail that takes you on a 40 mile tour of North Herefordshire; if you’re out and about spotting the historic half-timbered buildings, this is a good one to factor in for a lunch stop.

You’ll find a friendly greeting, local real ales on the bar, and a weekly changing menu of freshly cooked, local and seasonal food. If you don’t want a big bellyful have a ciabatta, otherwise opt for something from the mains - Hasselback Hunters Chicken, Broccoli and Blue Cheese Pancakes, or Rump Steak with mushrooms, peas, tomatoes and chips.

If it’s a nice day sit in the beer garden at the back of the pub; if you’ve got little ones with you, they can let off a bit of steam in the play area. What’s rather appealing is to sit out the front, chew the fat and watch the world go slowly by.
