The Canal Inn, Wrantage, North Curry, Taunton, Somerset
If you’re staying in the Taunton area in a Sleeps12 luxury large group holiday house and you fancy going out for lunch or dinner, give The Canal Inn at Wrantage a try. Reviews are good for this Somerset country pub, people rate the homemade food very highly and they like the attentive service and the ambience.
The Canal Inn has been refurbished in recent years but the essential character of the 200 year old building remains in the thick stone walls, the chunky ceiling timbers and big fireplaces. What’s nice in the colder months is to come here and sit comfy on the sofa, warming your toes by the wood-burner after a walk on the Somerset Levels nearby. In the summer you can sit out the front and watch the world go by, or in the enclosed garden at the back of the pub where there’s an outdoor bar and kitchen.
So the food. It’s good, very good and it’s made with ingredients sourced in the West Country, ideally as close to home as possible. There’s a big leaning towards fish and seafood so you’ll see Lyme Bay lobster and River Fowey mussels on the menu, as well as oysters, prawns and everyone’s favourite, Beer battered fish and chips. The beef they use is 40 day dry aged, the cheeses tend to be locally made, and the veg is all seasonal - just how it should be really. In the evening you’ll find a very tempting menu, with dishes like Half lobster with garlic butter, truffle parmesan fries and salad, Spring lamb rump with kale, parsnip, braised shoulder & pomme puree & jus, and 8oz Sirloin with mushroom and tomato, crispy shallots, duck fat chips (duck fat chips!!) and horseradish salad. Go for roast on Sunday and you’re in for a treat.
One thing you might be wondering when you get there is where’s the canal? Well, it’s not there anymore is the answer – the Chard Canal once crossed the road at the front of the pub on an aqueduct and that’s how The Canal Inn got its name.
