The Bear Inn, Wiveliscombe, Somerset

This 17th century coaching inn is right in the heart of the historic market town of Wiveliscombe. In many ways it’s a reminder of what pubs used to be like; everyone is welcome but there’s no frills, just a friendly atmosphere, good food, and very good beer (more later!). In true ‘proper pub’ style, you can play pool, darts, crib and poker; oh yes, it’s all very sociable here.
There’s plenty of variety on the menu so unless you’re really fussy, you’ll find something to tickle your tastebuds. The pizzas are very popular; try the Beary Fishy, with marinated white anchovies, capers, rocket & parmesan, or the Beary Meaty with BBQ shredded chicken, ham, pepperoni and chorizo, and if you don’t do gluten just let them know and they’ll do you a gluten free version. There’s pub classics of course, all homemade; pie of the day with mash & veg, beer battered fish and chips, and burgers, and there are specialities like Winter Ploughmans, Thai Green Curry, and Thick &  Smoky Sweet Potato and Three Bean Chilli Nachos. Sounds alright, doesn’t it? If you’ve got little folk with you they can choose something from the Children’s Menu or they can have a smaller portion from the mains. And if your pet pooch is with you, that’s fine, as long as he’s well behaved.
Back to the beer. Out the back, at the bottom of the garden, they have their own brewery where they produce four different types of ale. Not many pubs can say that, so make sure you try a pint; the Black Bear Ale and the lighter Goldihops are both very nice indeed.
