River Exe Café, Exmouth, Devon
A custom built barge floats off shore on the estuary of the River Exe; home to this fabulous café that’s reached by boat or water taxi from Exmouth marina. Dining here is quite an experience, with the unique atmosphere and amazing views, and the food is delicious; the Specials menu changes daily depending on what’s available in the local markets and what the fishermen have brought in. There’s a Mussel Bar where you can have Classic Moules Marineire, or you can try something a little different, like Devon Cider and Smoked Bacon, Fennel and Pernod, or Thai Green Curry mussels. On the mains menu are temptations such as Cracked Whole Brixham Crab, the River Exe Café 8oz Devon Beef Burger, Steamed Dorset Clams and Smoked Fish Chowder, or Caribbean Butternut, Chickpea and Spinach Curry. There’s an impressive choice of sharing platters too; the River Exe Spanish Paella Mix, Roasted Fisherman’s Platter, or Neptune Platter with lobster when available.Give it a go; it’s such a wonderful experience; it’s lovely inside and outside there’s seating on the deck and a covered area with heaters, so you can even sit out on chilly evenings, though a warm jumper is advisable. Families are welcome and there are two highchairs provided plus activities for young children; you can even bring the family pooch. Booking is essential and groups of 12+ people must pre-order a week before the reservation date.
