Holford Combe, the Quantocks, Somerset

From the quintessential Quantock village of Holford take the lane past some lovely old cottages and Combe House Hotel, and up the track to Holford Combe. This is lovely – open glades, a stream to paddle in, dingly dells, and a rope swing, but for a good walk go high up through the woods to the open heaths where you’ll have panoramic views of the bracken covered hills; this is true Quantock country where the romantic poets, Wordsworth and Coleridge spent their days musing. A steep descent will lead you back through the woods to the car park at the bowling green in the village. It’s amazing in the autumn – crimson berries, the turning colours, and the crunch of beech leaves beneath your feet. Don’t forget your camera.
