Exmoor Riding, Porlock, Somerset

Reconnecting with nature on horseback in the beautiful wild landscape of Exmoor National Park; it doesn’t get much better than that, surely? Exmoor Riding differs from other riding stables in that there’s a huge focus on the energies and relationships between the horse and rider, so much so that they’ve developed their own Gentle Horse and Rider techniques that help to connect man and beast, resulting in a more relaxing ride, aided by the horses going barefoot.

They do individual rides, which is a lovely idea if you’re down this way on holiday and it happens to be an equine enthusiast’s birthday or something, or they’ll take out small groups of 4-5 people. And boy oh boy, what an experience; if you’ve never explored Exmoor, if it’s a part of the world you’ve never seen, this is something to really look forward to. Setting off from the Exmoor Riding HQ in the peaceful village of Allerford, you’ll have a gentle ride through lanes and fields, over hills and moors, taking in viewpoints like Selworthy Beacon and Grabbist Ridge, discovering the incredible unspoilt scenery of the Vale of Porlock, and the quaintest villages, like Porlock and Bossington with their charming old cottages and flower hung walls.

Another thing they do at Exmoor Riding is workshops – Gentle Horse and Rider, Breath Heart Energy Connection, Wild Foraging and Herbal Self Selection. All very holistic, very much tuning into the natural ways of the world and being in harmony with Mother Nature.

Rides must be booked in advance and provisos are that riders must be comfortable at a walk and rising trot and they must be under 14st in weight.
