East Lambrook Manor Gardens, South Petherton, Somerset

If the thought of strolling around gorgeous English cottage gardens deep in the Somerset countryside appeals, you should pootle out around the lanes to East Lambrook Manor Gardens near South Petherton. These internationally famous gardens were designed by the renowned 20th century gardener Margery Fish, the aim being to make a garden that looks good all year round. Well, that aim was certainly achieved and it’s beautiful – a peaceful garden brimming with old-fashioned varieties planted side by side with more modern ones, winding paths lead you through the rich borders, with noted collections of hellebores, snowdrops and hardy geraniums.
The Plant Nursery sells a selection of herbaceous specimens and in the 17th century Malthouse there's a gallery with exhibitions of works by local artists. Round off your visit with tea and cake in the cafe; sit outside beneath the trees with a glass of home pressed apple juice in summer, and in winter have a mug of hot chocolate by the wood-burning stove.

Opening days vary throughout the year, but generally 10.00 am-5.00 am Feb-Oct
