Blackpool Sands, Dartmouth, Devon

Blackpool Sands is one of the beautiful beaches along the South Devon coast, just a few miles from Dartmouth. Unspoilt and sheltered, clear blue waters lap gently on the shore and up behind the golden shingle sand the cliffs and pinewoods gently climb to meet the soft rolling landscape of the South Hams.

It feels so good to be here on a glorious day in summer; the ambience is so relaxed and it’s easy to while away the time soaking up the rays of the sun, swimming or snorkelling and watching the kayaks, windsurfing and sailing offshore. The fact that Blackpool Sands is privately owned and managed means its one of the best maintained beaches in the area – it has Blue Flag status, which means dogs aren’t allowed between 1st April and 30th September.

There’s also everything you need here for a day by the sea when you’re on your summer holidays in Devon –a car park, loos, showers, sandpits in the main season, a beach café with indoor and outdoor seating, and a beach shop where you can buy and hire watersports equipment. There are also seasonal events which add to the happy vibe, though obviously, it gets busier then; if you want to leave the crowd behind for a while, go and stretch your legs with a stroll on the South West Coast Path.

Make the most of it, stay and watch the sunset, then head back to your large group holiday house to tumble into bed for a good night’s sleep. That fresh sea air will send you off to dreamland in no time.
