Augustus, Taunton, Somerset

Tucked away in a quiet courtyard off the main street in the Somerset county town of Taunton, Augustus is a small and informal bistro that serves simple but delicious food in a relaxed environment. The ethos is to let the food speak for itself, and to use the freshest local ingredients; well, that food is certainly talking loud and clear because this place is getting top notch reviews time and time again.

An an example of what they serve, on the starters are Brixham crab tart with a tossed salad, Chicken Liver on toast with onion marmalade, and Globe Artichoke with hen’s egg and herb mayonnaise. When it comes to mains take your pic from tempting delights such as Venison pie and faggot with mash and greens, Fillet of turbot with buttered leeks and ginger butter sauce, and Rib eye steak with chorizo baked peppers and French fries. Book a table here for lunch if you’re in town, although if you’re staying fairly close it’s worth the drive; someone drove 130 miles to come here for lunch, which says something.
