Watermouth Castle, nr Ilfracombe, Devon
If you thought a day out at a castle would be quite staid and leisurely, think again because Watermouth Castle near Ilfracombe on the North Devon Coast is completely the opposite. This is an amazing family day out if you've got younger children, they'll have an absolute whale of a time. There is a castle of course, a real one but they've really gone to town here and made it Fun with a big fat F. So, off you go to Adventure Land where you can play Crazy Fountain Golf, have a spin on the Cooking Pot Ride and whizz downhill on the Thunder Lunge Toboggan Run.
Then go to Merry Go Land where there are Mystical Water Gardens, a spooky dooky Haunted Mill, a Snake Tube Slide and swing Boats; meet the little folk who live in Gnomeland and visit the Tilting House; go down into the Dungeon Labyrinths where you'll laugh your socks off in The Hall of Mirrors -but are you brave enough to go on to the Maze and the Smugglers Dungeon?
See the Castle Treasures - magnificent suits of armour and sporting trophies, then step back in time in the Victorian arcade and see the displays that show how people lived in those days. Then it will be time to take your seats and settle down to watch the Water Show Extravaganza, and finally, to round off your visit with a good old fashioned picnic, or a visit to one of the cafes for tucker. Oh, and don’t forget to call in at the gift shop to buy some creamy homemade fudge to take home! Happy days!
