Tredegar House, Newport, Wales

Tredegar House was once the seat of the Morgan family, later the Lords Tredegar, who were wealthy landowners allegedly descended from Welsh princes. Now, this imposing 17th century Charles II mansion on the edge of Newport is owned and maintained by the National Trust who have done wonders in restoring it to its former glory. Inside you can admire the wealth of architecture, the collections of family portraits and antiques that were all part of life in a stately home back in the day.

There are also formal gardens to stroll through, and with 90 acres of parkland, plenty of room to let off steam or stride out for a good walk. Round it all off with a browse in the second hand bookshop and tea and cake in the café.

Opening hours vary throughout the year so check before you go.
