Thelma Hulbert Gallery, Honiton, Devon

If you’re having a browse around Honiton make time for a visit to the Thelma Hulbert Gallery; it’s easy to find, near the entrance to the big car park behind the Co-Op, a lovely big old white house tucked away among leafy trees. It’s a public gallery that showcases contemporary art and crafts as well as a permanent collection of Thelma Hulbert’s paintings.
Thelma Hulbert is a renowned artist who taught at Camden School for Girls and lived alone in Elmfield House until her death in 1995. Two of her works are held at the Tate Gallery.
It’s all light and airy inside and there’s such a wonderful, peaceful feel about the place. What’s really good is that upstairs they usually have some really good hands-on fun for children (and adults!) to complement exhibitions and in May every year there’s a garden party with creative art activities for all ages. Take the kids along, join in, enjoy yourselves.
