The Swan Inn, Lympstone, Exmouth, Devon

Swan into the Swan Inn down by the harbour in Lympstone, for lunch or dinner, or just for a quiet pint while you enjoy views over the beautiful estuary of the River Exe. It’s a very welcoming place this, nicely traditional, with flower boxes spilling over the windowsills at the front, and smiley faces to greet you once you step inside among the centuries old ceiling beams and wood panelling.

The food is good, all homemade using locally sourced ingredients that showcase the bountiful delights produced in Devon; meat from the hills, mussels from the River Exe, fish from Lyme Bay.

The only thing is, you might take a while to make your mind up because the mains are all so very tempting; among them are Herb crusted lamb belly, River Exe Moules Frites, Wild mushroom tagliatelle and Elston Farm beefburger. If you’re after something lighter at lunchtime there’s a good choice of sandwiches, if the little ones won’t eat grown-up food there’s a menu just for them. Come on Sunday and you’re in for a treat because they serve a fantastic Roast rump of Devon beef with giant Yorkshire puddings, and if you don’t fancy that there’s more on the menu, with Minted lamb shank, Free range honey mustard glazed pork hock and Pie of the Day among the offerings.

Out the front there’s a courtyard garden, so if by chance, the sun is graciously shining down on the day you visit The Swan, get there early and sit yourselves down. Oh, and that quiet pint; make it an Otter beer.
