The Swan, Bampton, Devon

If you want to go out to eat when you’re staying near Bampton on your large group holiday in Devon, try The Swan. It’s one that never seems to disappoint since the new owners took over in early 2024, probably because they’ve got everything right. They know how to make people feel welcome, the ambience is cheerful and relaxed, the food is nothing short of fantastic, and they have a good selection of real ales.

The food. Pub food it is not; there are a few pub staples on the menu, albeit their own take on things. Fish & chips is battered haddock loin served with skin-on fries, herby peas, tartar sauce and lemon; the Cheeseburger is a Longhorn patty with sticky ox cheek, gherkin, house burger sauce, crispy onion and skin-on fries. And the steak – it’s not just any old steak – we’re talking 40 day aged grass fed Longhorn sirloin steak, served with organic leaf salad and those skin-on fries.

All dishes reflect the bounty of what’s to be found in the local area, whether it’s grown in the fields, grazed in the hills, or foraged from the woodlands and shore. Mains include Grilled ray wing with foraged rock samphire, Jersey Royals, smoked bacon, lemon & caper brown butter, and Slow cooked ox cheek with Caesar salad, beef dripping croutons, bone marrow, garlic & parsley flatbread. You’ll find things on your plate that are home pickled and fermented, you’ll find homemade Focaccia, sauces and stocks, and if you order ice cream for your pud, that will be made in-house too.

Go on Wednesday night for Steak night, book the private dining room and choose from the scrumptious delights on the Feasting Menu if there’s a group of you (the dining room seats 20).
