The Golden Lion, Tipton St John, Ottery St Mary, Devon

The Golden Lion at Tipton St John is certainly a pub with a warm welcome; it’s a traditional place with all the old charm of a typical village inn – you know, low beamed ceilings, thick stone walls and a blazing log fire on colder days, but it’s not without its eclectic touches in the form of Tiffany lamps and original paintings from West Country artists. Outside there’s a walled terrace and a grassy beer garden.
They like their seafood here and with the Jurassic Coast just 3 miles away they can rely on getting fresh fish in daily; the menu is one of British, Mediterranean and French peasant style dishes and it’s full of temptation with the likes of Moules frites, Magret de canard, Roast partridge, Chicken Breton, Venison pie, and Stuffed butternut squash. There’s also a good wine list and of course, they serve the local brew, Otter ale.
What’s nice is to walk here along the River Otter from Ottery St Mary, have lunch and stroll back.
