The George Inn, St Briavels, Lydney, Gloucestershire

The George is on the main road through the village of St Briavels near Lydney, so you can't miss it; it's whitewashed stone on the outside as country pubs often are in these parts, and that adds to the lovely traditional side of things. Step inside and you could be forgiven for thinking you might have stepped back in time a little, but so what? It actually makes a refreshing change to see a pub that hasn't been opened out, painted grey-green and had new wooden floors laid, and besides, it's the service and the food that matter more.
They say both are very good, and that's the view from locals and from reviews on t'internet. Food is home cooked, with temptations on the menu like Gourmet Faggots, 5 Bean Cassoulet, Hand Carved Ham, Egg and Chips, and Baked Chicken & Asparagus Pancakes. The Sunday lunch is apparently, pretty special. Give it a go after a walk in the fresh air.
