Muchelney, Somerset

An undeniably beautiful and tranquil village on the Somerset Levels near Langport, best known for the ruins of its Benedictine Abbey (English Heritage) where you can see the remains of the monk's quarters and the Abbot's lodgings. Visit the late medieval Priest's House (NT) and John Leach's Muchelney Pottery; in the summer have a cream tea at School Farm, but most of all, pop in the church and feast your eyes on the 17th century paintings of angels on the colourful wagon roof; not to be missed.
