Burrow Mump, Burrowbridge, Somerset

Now and then prominent hills or mounds rise out of the flat, watery landscape of the Somerset Levels; Burrow Mump is one of them, at the side of the A361 that cuts through the village of Burrowbridge, between Taunton and Glastonbury.

A short steep climb to the top of Burrow Mump reveals spectacular views, especially in the winter when the fields are in flood. The ruins of St. Michael’s church stand on the summit, now a memorial to those who gave their lives in the first and second world wars; it’s a good spot to reflect or to spend a mindful moment. You can almost roll back down to the King Alfred Inn at the foot of the hill for a laid back pub lunch.
