Buckfast Abbey, Buckfastleigh, Devon

If you visit Buckfast Abbey near Ashburton when you’re on your large group holidays in Devon, you’ll come away with a feeling of peace and inner calm, such is the effect this beautiful place has on you. The setting is a secluded wooded valley on the banks of the River Dart where a self sufficient community of Benedictine monks live and work. The abbey that originally stood here fell into ruin after the Dissolution and wasn’t rebuilt until 1882, with the magnificent Abbey Church consecrated in 1932.

Visitors can look around the church and enjoy the tranquillity of the themed gardens that include a Sensory Garden and a Physic Garden. Find out how the monks live in the Monastic Way exhibition, maybe stop for lunch in the Grange Restaurant and then have a browse in the Monastic shop where you can buy a bottle of the famous Buckfast Tonic Wine to take home.

Open: 9.00am-6.00pm daily (opening times for shops and the restaurant may differ)  No dogs.
