Bristol Zoo Gardens, Bristol, Somerset
Heaps to see and do all year round, whatever your age; the gardens are a delight with some nationally important plant collections, some amazing old and ornamental trees, sub-tropical areas, rock gardens and formal borders. You’ll see all kinds of animals – gorillas, Asiatic lions, red pandas, howler monkeys, capybaras, lemurs, golden lion tamarins, meerkats, pygmy hippos, tapirs, two-toed sloths, warty pigs, sand cats – and the reptile collection is awesome, with mountain chickens, giant turtles, rhinoceros iguanas and yellow-headed day geckos. If you’re an amphibian fan you’ll love the colourful poison arrow frogs, and if insects are your thing, check out the Lord Howe Island stick insects and the purple jewel beetles. Bird lovers can see greater flamingos, Victoria crowned pigeons and brightly coloured love birds. See the beautiful butterflies in the tropical rainforest, and the seals playing on the shipwreck. There’s an Activity Centre, an Adventure Playground, and plenty of places to stop and eat, whether it’s a picnic, a light bite from the Hungry Monkey Kiosk, or lunch in the Hide café. A fabulous family day out!
Closed Christmas Day only, open 9.00-5.00 and there are two car parks.
