Brassica, Beaminster, Dorset

Right on the square in Beaminster, Brassica won the accolade of Best Local Restaurant in the South West in 2020 from The Good Food Guide, so you know it’s going to be good. What the owners set out to do was run a restaurant that was unpretentious, didn’t follow trends or concepts and served top notch food; a place where you could feel entirely comfortable tucking into jolly good fare. And that’s exactly what they’ve done; between them they have years of experience of working in the hospitality and retail sectors, and it shows, it’s a good place to eat.

Food is for the larger part, made using produce that’s grown or raised locally, so what’s available on a day-to-day basis is a huge factor. It’s fresh as fresh can be so don’t expect a huge menu, though the choice is still enough to have you deliberating because you might well want it all! On the mains are things like Devon Ruby steak and frites with black garlic, Baked rigatoni with venison meatballs, tomato and red wine, and grilled hake with chickpeas and wild garlic. They serve elevenses, lunch and dinner and have a wine list that’s selected with much expertise.

Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? Well, it is, and if there has to be a downside it could only be that like many of the best restaurants in this neck of the woods, it’s not a huge place by any means; whilst they can accommodate large groups, at weekends, lunch is the preferred option. You’ll have no regrets.
