Big Pit National Coal Museum, South Wales

Just 30 minutes from Monmouth and less than an hour from Bristol, Big Pit is not just a working coal mine; it’s also one of the country’s best known mining museums. Learn all about the black stuff and the huge part it’s played in Welsh history, how it’s shaped communities. Exhibitions in the Pithead Baths and the Colliery Buildings tell you all about the life of a miner, and about the geology of coal and its many uses. Go 300 feet beneath the ground on a multimedia tour of a coal mine; imagine life as one of the thousands of men who worked hard all day at the coal face.

There’s a coffee shop serving hot and cold snacks and cakes, and in the summer, the original Miner's Canteen is open.

An eye opener that gives you a different perspective on something you probably don’t think about much, but worth a visit whilst enjoying your UK holiday with Sleeps12.
