Berkeley Castle, Berkeley, Gloucestershire

Believe it or not, this ancient fortress has been lived in by the same family for over 900 years! If you go there you can see the cell where Edward II was reputedly murdered, and the impressive state rooms and Great Hall. The landscaped gardens are wonderful with a lily pond, and gorgeous collections of magnolias and roses. It’s a good family day out; the older people can admire the fine furniture, oil paintings and tapestries whilst the youngsters can dress up as kings and queens and play giant snakes and laddders or explore the woodland grove where there’s a willow tunnel and a tepee. There’s also a butterfly house within the old walled garden, open from May to September. Have a picnic on the lawn or light lunch in the Yurt Restaurant.
