Coat Barn - Accommodation
A generous helping of luxury togetherness in the beautiful Somerset countryside is on the menu when you stay at Coat Barn. Once the grain and hay barns on a working farm, this large group holiday house has undergone an incredible transformation to become a huge holiday house for large family groups. It’s big and spacious throughout and comes with all the mod cons you need to make your stay stress free. The location is wonderful, on a very quiet lane in a tiny hamlet on the edge of the Somerset Levels, with bounteous fresh air, bird song and peace.
Park up, close the gate and go on in to the wide hallway; to the right is a very slick and stylish kitchen with plenty of space to cook for a large group, or for caterers to work if you hire them to come in and create a scrumptious celebration feast for you. There’s also a table and chairs, which works well if you have younger children in your group who need an earlier dinner time than the rest of you. Beyond the kitchen is the huge dining hall where centre stage is a long handcrafted table and to either end is a staircase.
Take the stairs at the end of the dining hall up to Bedrooms 1 and 2. Both of these rooms have ensuite bathrooms with a bath; Bedroom 1 has a separate shower, Bedroom 2 has on overhead shower. Bedroom 1 is particularly spacious with full height windows to both sides at one end of the room. The other staircase from the dining hall leads to Bedrooms 3 and 4 and a wide galleried landing – the ideal place for you to take turns to entertain everyone before dinner! Bedroom 3 has an ensuite shower room, Bedroom 4 has the luxury of a dressing room leading through to an ensuite shower room. Floor to ceiling windows to three sides of the bedroom make this a wonderfully light and airy space. Bedrooms are all finished in neutral colours, exuding a very calm and restful feel; with black out curtains as well, you’re bound to get a good night’s sleep.
Back downstairs, left of the kitchen is a large utility area with laundry facilities, a chest freezer and a tall fridge. Beyond this is a family bathroom and Bedroom 5 which sleeps 4 in two super king beds, a super king and two singles or in 4 singles, so it can be a family room or somewhere for 4 older children to sleep dormitory style.
Continue through the dining hall to the living room, with a huge U-shape sofa and a big screen TV – perfect for getting together of an evening to watch a family movie, all snuggled up nice and comfy with bowls of popcorn to pass round. Off the living room a corridor leads to Bedrooms 6, 7 and 8, all with TVs and ensuite shower rooms. The layout of Coat Barn is similar to a Roman villa would have been, with the accommodation centred round a large courtyard garden; the corridors to either side have floor to ceiling windows, giving a very fresh and light filled ambience to the house.
The pool hall is just across the courtyard and has full height doors that open onto the garden to let the sunshine in; upstairs there’s a WC and the games room, which is a seriously cool place to hang out, lounging about on bean bags, playing table tennis and table football. Get the whole family up there and raise a games challenge – the loser has to do 20 laps around the courtyard! All good fun and something to keep you giggling.
What’s great about the garden is that it’s private and it’s south facing so when the sun has got his hat on get out there, soak up those rays, fire up the barbecue and get the sausages sizzling. Play leap frog on the lawn, do handstands, cartwheels, or if it’s just TOO hot, put your feet up on the loungers. To the side of the house there’s play equipment for the little ones and another area of lawn where you can all get together for a game of rounders or French cricket, maybe take a picnic out there and tuck into egg sandwiches and sausage rolls with lashings of fizzy pop. And that’s just what family holidays are all about; reconnecting, spending happy days together, having fun, making memories. Book your stay today!
