Bridgwater is a thriving town and major manufacturing centre on the River Parrett in Somerset; it has a rich heritage of shipbuilding, evidenced with a visit to the Blake Museum or a stroll around the historic docks where you can see vintage cranes, winding equipment and lock gates. The town has supermarkets, big name stores, and a Victorian arcade with one-off independent shops; one of the most attractive parts is the Castle Street and Kings Square area, with imposing Georgian architecture and an Arts Centre that plays host to live music, theatre and comedy throughout the year.

Bridgwater is famous for its illuminated carnival, the biggest and most spectacular in Europe, held on Guy Fawkes Night every year. A fantastic procession of brightly lit floats is followed by a very exciting performance known as ‘squibbing’, when long rows of fireworks held aloft on poles are set off at the same time. Close by are the beautiful Somerset Levels, a unique landscape of wetlands and nature reserves that are a haven for wildlife. In the opposite direction you can explore the rufty-tufty wilds of the Quantock Hills AONB where red deer and wild ponies graze contentedly on the bracken-clad heaths.
