South Pool, Kingsbridge, Devon

If you’re out and about pootling round the lanes near Kingsbridge when you’re on your group holidays in Devon, you might like to stop off and have a stroll around South Pool because it’s such a charming village and the location, by South Pool Creek on the eastern side of the Kingsbridge estuary is idyllic. It’s small, with little more than 140 residents so life is peaceful here – and the villagers are very fortunate to have an excellent gastro pub – the Millbrook Inn, which is well worth booking for lunch. Before you go, stroll around and take in the centuries old cottages and have a look around the 15th century church, built mostly of local slate. Wander down to the creek for an amble along the shore, find a place to sit and just enjoy being here; the sense of tranquility is immense.

In 2022 South Pool was named as the most beautiful village in the UK and Ireland by Conde Nast Traveller magazine. With the backdrop of the softly rolling hills of the South Hams, the timeless charm and the gentle ebb and flow of the tide, it’s easy to see why.
