Millbrook Inn, South Pool, Kingsbridge, Devon

The Millbrook Inn has the loveliest setting, in South Pool – one of the UK’s prettiest villages set on a tidal creek on the eastern side of the Kinsgbridge estuary in Devon. The pub has a very good reputation for the food it serves, made using the finest local produce, including fish and seafood landed on the shores at Salcombe. Organic meat and vegetables come from the owner’s family farm nearby and meat is butchered in-house.

The menu changes with the seasons to reflect what’s available in the fields and woods; it’s kept small, which is always a good sign that everything is cooked to order. Larger bites to tempt you at lunchtime include Philly cheese steak baguette, Fire roasted butternut squash with smoked ricotta, radicchio, sage and squash velouté and seeds, and if you have room for it, Pheasant cooked in sloe gin, with chestnuts, red cabbage puree, kalettes, posh bread sauce and pigs in blankets. The Sunday roast is fantastic, especially if you round it off with Winter berry steamed pudding with blackcurrant ice cream – a gastronomic delight indeed.
