The Stags Head Inn, Filleigh, Barnstaple, Devon

The award-winning Stags Head Inn is tucked away in the sleepy village of Filleigh in North Devon, where it stands as it has for centuries, looking pretty as a picture, beside a lake, all whitewashed walls, heavy thatch and tall chimneys. That’s what it’s like round here, it’s all rather charming really, but then it's on the Castle Hill estate, surrounded by glorious rolling hills and wooded valleys, and it seems to be the way that everything is in keeping and easy on the eye.

Inside it’s eclectic to say the least, a bit of modern, a lot of old and traditional; there’s a bar and three dining rooms, including a private dining room for 12, with more of a tea shoppy feel. But so what? They do a good menu at The Stags Head Inn! All homemade, wholesome kind of stuff, full of local ingredients, the closer the better – like pheasant from the shoot just around the corner. What’s amazing is the range of dishes they have – they must be cooking all day, from the minute they get up to when they go to bed at night! Crispy topped fish bake, Creamy chicken curry, Slow roasted lamb shank with red wine gravy, Pan roasted fillet of local venison… there are daily specials, a menu for children, and the team will do their very best to cater for special diets.

If the weather’s nice you can sit outside and watch the ducks waddling about and if you choose the right spot, see the trout swimming lazily in the lake.
