The Kings Arms, Otterton, Ottery St Mary, Devon

You’ll find The Kings Arms on the main street in Otterton; you can’t miss it because it’s a big old place, black and white on the outside and all very traditional looking. Inside it’s something of a surprise; a modern makeover has created a space that’s light and airy but still manages to retain that village pub feel. The original features help – the low ceilings and the red brick fireplace where the wood-burner ticks over to keep it all toasty on colder days; the quirky tables hand made by a carpenter from along the coast at Exmouth add a touch of the homespun - and local too, we like that.

They’re big on local at The Kings Arms; beer from Otter Brewery, cider from Sandford Orchards, gin from Salcombe. Even the soft drinks are from Devon but that’s no surprise because finding as much as they possibly can within the same county and supporting artisans, growers and farmers is all part of the ethos. So of course what goes into the food is sourced as close to home as it can be and that’s reflected in the varied menu – Haddock Mornay, Pie of the day, Mushroom & beetroot vegan burger, Lyme Bay lobster Mac n Cheese, Greendale duck breast, homemade lasagne are all on the mains menu. If you fancy something lighter go for a Ploughman’s, sandwich or a jacket potato.

On warmer days you can dine outside; there are terraces either side of the pub and at the back, a children’s play area and lawns. Take the dog, four legged friends are welcome, and should you by any chance arrive on horseback, no worries, there’s secure parking for them.
