The Beaver Inn, Appledore, Devon

If you come over all peckish when you’re strolling around the colourful winding streets of Appledore on the North Devon coast, head for The Beaver Inn by the estuary, especially if you have a liking for fish – they have an excellent reputation here for the fish they serve, fresh off the boats in the harbour each day in line with their ethos of using good quality local produce wherever possible.

The Beaver Inn isn’t a huge pub by any means but what it lacks in size it makes up for with a big friendly atmosphere; locals and visitors chat together and it all swings along very nicely, just as it did over 400 years ago when the inn first started serving the local fishermen. The food is homemade, as you’d expect, with a lot of fresh fish on the menu. Lunchtime it’s things like baguettes and pub grub; Ham, egg & chips, Devon & Cornwall rump steak, Fish and chips. In the evening it all steps up a pace with starters like Seafood chowder, Half a kilo of Appledore mussels, and Duck & chicken terrine. For mains you might choose Homemade steak & stilton pie, Appledore fish pie, Prawn & crab risotto, or for the vegetarians, Green lentil meatballs.

You can eat in the restaurant, where you’ll have sea views, or in the bar, though if the weather’s good sit out on the patio because that outlook over the estuary is wonderful; there’s something very calming about it, the coastal air, the light and the ambience. Lap it up whilst the kids have a game of mini golf.
