Puzzlewood, Coleford, Gloucestershire

If you go down in the woods today... Puzzlewood is said to be the inspiration for the forests of Middle Earth in J R R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, and it’s easy to see why; this family attraction near Coleford in The Forest of Dean is brilliant and it's bound to ignite your imagination no matter what age you are. Puzzlewood is a magical woodland trail with a whole mile of winding pathways and over 200 steps; it's like something from a fairytale,  a world of rustic timber pathways snaking through twisted tree roots and gulleys of moss covered rocks, with lots to find as you go round – secret caves, magic doorways and dinosaur feet wait to be discovered.

There are animals to see too - ponies, donkeys, goats, cows, ducks and chickens, so go and say hello, then have a play in the mazes, they have them indoors and outdoors. As if the woods aren't enough fun, there's a playground too, and a gift shop where you can buy a little memento of your visit. Round it off with a cake and a drink in the café.

Opening hours vary throughout the year so it's best to check before you plan your trip
NB: Not suitable for the less able bodied or pushchairs, and dogs are not allowed.
