Lympstone Manor, Lympstone, Exmouth, Devon

If you happen to be in Devon celebrating a very special birthday or anniversary, treat yourselves to Michelin star dining at Lympstone Manor near Exmouth. The setting is a Grade II listed mansion in beautiful grounds overlooking the tranquil waters of the Exe estuary and the softly rolling Devon countryside. The eclectic European menus are from acclaimed chef Michael Caines whose larder is the West Country; local and seasonal are the big focus for exquisite food matched to perfection with wines from the extensive cellar.

The 3 elegant dining rooms are all named after landmark views from Lympstone Manor across the estuary and are the most wonderful backdrop to your fine dining experience. Lunch, from the 4 course Lunch Menu or 8 Course Signature Menu, is served from 12:00-2:00pm Wednesday and Thursday and 12:00-2:30pm Friday to Sunday. Dinner is served 7:00pm-9:00pm Monday to Thursday and 7:00pm-9:30p  Friday to Sunday, with a choice of the Taste of the Estuary, A La Carte or 8 Course Signature menus.

If you were to opt for the 4 course Lunch Menu you might have an appetiser of Chicken liver parfait, starter of Wye Valley asparagus, mains of Lightly steamed line caught hake with spring peas, wild garlic, shallot and bacon velouté, and a dessert of Raspberry and lychee souffle. From the A La Carte Menu you could start with Tartlet of roasted quail, followed by Darts Farm spring lamb for your main course, and Green apple sorbet for dessert; round it off with a selection of British cheeses, coffee and Petits Fours. On the Estuary Tasting Menu you can expect to find dishes like Raviolo of Lyme Bay crab and Pan fried John Dory, and on the 8 Course Signature Menu, Darts Farm chicken and truffle terrine, Anise roasted Cornish seabass, and Creedy carver duckling.

Lympstone Manor is also divine for afternoon tea; imagine a glorious day in summer, the sun high in the sky, views out over the peaceful river to the green hills beyond, and before you, freshly made sandwiches, scones fresh from the oven, cakes and French patisseries baked that morning. Thick clotted cream, delectable preserves, and a glass of champagne to sip. Now that’s heavenly.
