Kingsbridge & District Light Railway, Kingsbridge, Devon

Known fondly as the little train by the Kingsbridge estuary, Kingsbridge & District Light Railway is one of only two solar powered miniature railways in the world. Climb on board for a pootle along the waterside, wave to the passers-by, enjoy the lovely scenery.

The original Kingsbridge railway was on the opposite embankment but it fell into disrepair and was finally dismantled in 1991. However – yes, there’s a however, of course; thanks to the hard work and huge efforts of a local campaign in 2015 the railway is back up and running. It’s still run by local volunteers and relies heavily on donations, but they have plans to extend another loop and add more stops. If they get there, it would be great, because this is such a sweet thing to do when you’re on your family holidays in Devon.
