Cleeve Abbey, Somerset
Here’s a nice way to spend a warm afternoon: go to Bishops Lydeard and board a steam train on the West Somerset Railway; alight at Washford station and take a ten minute stroll to this beautiful abbey. Explore every nook and cranny – the cloister buildings and the gatehouse, the angel roof and 13th century heraldic tiles in the 15th century refrectory. See the great dormitory, take in the virtual tour and the exhibition; soak up the hallowed tranquillity of this place. Then go and find a pleasant spot in the grounds (perhaps by the stream), spread your rug and settle down for a lazy picnic.
