The Blue Ball Inn, Triscombe, Somerset
At first sight, the Blue Ball Inn is the epitome of the perfect country pub; go inside for a drink and it’s even more so. Hugely in its favour is the setting – a peaceful and pretty village deep in the Somerset’s Quantock Hills, with the backdrop of woodlands and achingly beautiful countryside. Like a lot of the buildings in Triscombe, The Blue Ball is thatched, in fact it’s one of the few remaining thatched pubs in the country, testament to a history that goes back over 400 years. Yep, it first opened as a hostelry way back in 1608!
Inside has seen an extensive refurbishment in very recent years, all done with much consideration to the fabric and character of the building, so it maintains its rusticity. You’ll find a log fire going on colder days, locals sitting at the bar chatting, and dogs dozing, just the kind of relaxed ambience you’d expect. A lot of the beer is locally brewed, wines are specially selected, and food currently comes from renowned guest chefs with themed events like Caribbean Day, a Sri Lankan Supper, and Cocktails and Nibbles Afternoons. They also have regular events with live music and things like Gin and Whiskey Tastings, and Cocktail Masterclasses, which, think about it, are a great idea for a special birthday present if you happen to be down this way, staying for a family celebration in Somerset.
The thing is, what’s not to like? An old country pub in a lovely location, with a warm atmosphere, good food and drink, a garden for when the sun’s come out to play - what more could you want?
