Thorney Lakes, Nr Langport, Somerset

One for the pescatores. Go to Thorney Lakes near Langport on the Somerset Levels and you'll find a secluded 4 acre lake stocked with a good variety of fish, carp, bream, roach, tench and gudgeon among them. The setting is idyllic; the sun beats down on the fields, the breeze whispers through the trees; if you’re quiet enough you’re bound to spot some wildlife as there are over 70 species of birds recorded here, including nesting kingfishers.

There are no pegs – you can fish from anywhere on the bank and spend a half day or a full day connecting with nature, waiting for that familiar tug on the line. The rules state only 2 rods per person and that all children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
There’s plenty of parking, loos, a thatched shelter and disabled access, and if you want to stretch your legs go for a stroll around the 2-mile nature trail.
